What is House and Contents Insurance?
House & content coverage protects your home and your belongings under one policy. A home insurance policy covers the physical structure of your house, including walls, roofs, fixtures, and built-in fittings that are part of the building. Buildings cover is a key part of a home insurance policy, providing protection for the main dwelling and additional structures on your property.
Contents cover protects the items inside your home, such as furniture, appliances, electronics, clothing, and personal belongings. These policies are designed to protect your personal belongings and may include optional extras. When combined, insurance home & contents offers broader protection than taking either cover on its own.
Building cover protects what is fixed in place, while home & belongings insurance focuses on what you own and use every day inside the home. With this cover homeowners are protected against common risks like fire, storms, and theft.
This cover helps for repairs or replacements, reduces financial stress, and fast recovery after damage. Insurance policies can be tailored to include different types of cover, and setting the correct buildings sum insured is important to avoid underinsurance.

How Much Does Home and Contents Insurance Cost in Australia?
The cost of home and contents insurance in Australia varies based on your home and what you insure inside it. Most households pay anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars per year, depending on home value, contents value, and risk level. Homes in higher-risk areas may cost more to insure.
Pricing is affected by your location, flood or bushfire risk, crime rates, building age, construction type, and the value of your home and contents. Higher cover levels, optional extras, and fewer security features can also increase premiums. Prices differ between insurance because each uses different risk models, flood maps, claims data, and discounts. That’s why it’s smart to compare home and contents insurance quotes to find the best value.
Optional add-ons like accidental damage, flood cover, portable valuables, or motor burnout can increase costs. Since every home is different, the best way to know your exact price is to request a personalised quote. For comprehensive information about costs, fees, and disclosures, make sure to consult the financial services guide provided by your insurance agent.
FAQs Your Questions Answered
You should insure your home for the full rebuild cost and your contents for their total replacement value. This ensures your home and belongings can be repaired or replaced without financial gaps after a claim.
Yes, some contents may be covered outside your home if your policy includes portable valuables cover. Items like laptops, phones, or jewellery usually need to be listed to stay protected away from home.
Flood cover may be included or optional depending on the policy you choose. Dawson helps you check flood definitions and add the right cover for flood-prone or coastal areas like Tweed Heads.
Your laptop may be covered if you have portable contents or valuables cover. Without this option, items lost outside the home are usually not included in standard contents insurance.
Your home value is based on rebuild cost, while contents value is the total cost to replace everything you own. Making a room-by-room list helps avoid underinsuring your home and contents.
Animal damage is usually not covered if it happens gradually or is preventable. Some sudden damage caused by unexpected animal entry may be covered depending on your policy terms.
Yes, carpets are usually covered under contents insurance if they are not permanently fixed. Built-in flooring may be covered under home insurance instead of contents.
Your renewal price can change due to claims history, rising rebuild costs, location risk, or insurer pricing updates. Changes to flood risk or building costs also affect premiums.
You should get home insurance as soon as you exchange contracts or take ownership of a property. This ensures your home is protected from day one against damage or loss.
